Phase 1 and 2

Here is the kitchen before we moved in. It looks great but the island cut it off making it smaller and some cabinets unusable which was frustrating.


There was no pantry or space for food storage in the original design so John built these cabinets on the blank wall of the dining room. It holds a lot of food. Yeah!!!!






The oven was so old broken and barely working. The oven temperature varied every time I used it and I had to have an oven thermometer to know what it was doing. It was awful. One element was missing. So it was in serious need of an update. Yuck!


So I bought a set of used kitchen appliances from the local FB yardsale for $100 - stove/oven, side-by-side refrigerator, and dishwasher.





That purchased prompted Phase 1 of the kitchen remodel. The old stove/oven was built-in so we had to remove that. The baseboard heater was UNDER the oven so we disabled that. What were they thinking!!!!





The fridge was bigger so it did not fit in the same spot so we had to turn the corner and build a new corner cabinet. Then the island was a tight squeeze of about 24" but summertime came and outside projects were necessary to eliminate flooding so it was put on hold.

But summertime brings hot temperatures and the house was heating up so John removed the old sliding glass door with a single door and small window so we could install the swamp cooler in the window to cool the whole house. 



 


As the previous post mentions, we had John and Cynthia's family over for dinner and it was a super tight fit with the table, extra leaf and ten chairs. It was not pretty. So this morning when the wind was blowing and making it difficult to work outside, John decided today was the day for the beginning of Phase 2.



The island cabinets were rearranged to make the kitchen a horseshoe shape lining the walls with cabinets and leaving the middle open. 



We knew we would need to replace the flooring when we opened it up so there is a temporary patch job over the old '70s linoleum. The joys of remodeling. 

The internet modem is currently sitting on two food storage buckets in the middle of the room until the electrical can be finished.  




Of course, it is not finished. There will be a Phase 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and .................. 


 

Because the sink plumbing has leaked extensively over the last five plus years, the sub-floor needs to be replaced and then the whole thing will get a new matching plywood floor like the front room. No more cheap laminate "wood" floor that I hate.
