Our new entryway and front porch began from the results of the flooding in September 2013. Apparently, the original builders did not tamp down the ground sufficiently enough before pouring the front porch cement creating a large hollow chasm. To overcome this, we decided to extend the entryway and add a front porch.
From the outside, the front porch cement pad was cut and chiseled away to make footings for the future addition.
We found roots from the evergreen tree running under the cement and as we had suspected it was hollow underneath.
The footings were poured and then we had a mote for a while. It was during the raining season (August-October) so we made a bridge to keep dry rather than leaping across the 3' span.
Bonnie was tired of trying to leap with groceries in hand or arms full with something. She insisted that John make a "bridge". It was sufficient for our needs. The door was finally delivered after 3 months of run-around from the shipping company. Then John could start building the walls and get the right measurements for the door opening.
To say the least, there was a lot of discussion/arguing about how this was being built.
